The data were further consistent with the idea that inorganic nitrogen is funneled down the metabolic pathways of the chloroplast to energy-synthesizing, photosynthetically active organelles, in P. umbilicalis. It is not clear why a higher organism such as Porphyra umbilicalis, which can be easily grown in a growth medium with low amounts of nitrogen, has evolved an internal pathway of nitrogen uptake, while most other microorganisms need a much higher concentration of nitrogen.
