Mathematics is a vast and complicated subject. It is a branch of knowledge that encompasses number, geometry, and statistics. Mathematics was invented by the ancient Greeks to measure amounts of grain for taxation purposes! The people who were involved in mathematics had a methodical approach to problems and had a clear understanding of the need for accuracy in calculation. The Greeks were not the only ones to use mathematics; medieval Islamic scholars made major contributions in algebra during times when European mathematicians were still struggling with arithmetic. They also developed such fundamental concepts such as the Fibonacci sequence (a sequence which determines how many spiral shells there would be on an n-spiral seashell). Islamic mathematicians were also known for their development of trigonometry. They developed trigonometry based on the trigonometric functions, which are ratios of the sine, cosine and tangent. In 11th century Europe, scholars believed that there were only five types of angles: acute angles (90°), right angles (90°), obtuse angles (90° with one side straight), right obtuse angles (90° with two sides straight) and acute obtuse angle with a small or large discrepancy between side lengths for a right angle. Their most significant discovery was a new type of angle with a proportional relationship between adjacent sides. They called this type of angle a 'trigonometry', the study of triangles. The word trigonometry is derived from ancient greek. Trigonos means triangle and metron means measure. Math has not only been used to study and solve problems, but has also been applied to find answers to real-world situations such as: × Create a right triangle by making two straight lines with 90 degree angles and cutting them at 2 points.(See image) × Measure the length of one side with a ruler, label it as 'x'. × Measure the length of diagonal side, label it as 'y'. × Measure the length of hypotenuse, label it as 'z'. × Calculate the area of triangle by using Pythagorean theorem. The following are several interesting observations about mathematics. 1. Mathematics is a branch of knowledge that has provided us with so much societal advantage, from being able to build machines to programs finding cures for diseases. 2. Much of our daily lives are governed by mathematical principles, from how cars steer on highways to how our bodies process food into energy after eating! 3. Many concepts in mathematics are based on other natural phenomena, which have simply been named differently. For example, the concept of a triangle was developed from the observation of how a human body looks from the side. 4. Mathematics also has a surprise element for young students.
